Kış Depresyonu (Winter Depression)
Project type
Cyanotype print and LED light, 45×35 cm
History
January 2024
As the layers of nature converge with the depths of art, the cold and somber atmosphere of winter finds an echo in the forms of rocks. In this project, rocks emerge as a visual reflection of winter depression. These rock surfaces symbolize the internal challenges brought on by winter; with their bleak and cold structures, they represent the sensations stirred within our inner world by emotional fluctuations.
Winter depression is directly linked to a lack of direct sunlight; the reduction in daylight triggers biological and chemical changes in the human body, which can lead to mood swings and depressive feelings. Phototherapy—a method where an individual spends time before a controlled light source at specific intervals—is frequently used to treat this condition.
The cyanotype printing technique, a light-sensitive process, undergoes a chemical reaction and changes color when exposed to sunlight. In this respect, the technique bears a strong resemblance to the phototherapy used in the healing process. Consequently, the theme of winter depression becomes intrinsically intertwined with the creation process of cyanotype prints. While conveying the sense of melancholy and lack of light brought by winter through a visual experience, the project focuses on exploring, in depth, the interaction between nature and our inner world.
