History

January 2023

This project creates a representation of women who have been relegated to the background throughout art history and in all spheres of social life. Indeed, women artists have largely been rendered invisible across the history of art, a field shaped predominantly by the names of male artists. In art, as in many other domains, women have often been positioned as secondary figures alongside men. Through selected and manipulated images, the social function and position of the female body are called into question. In response to the female image viewed through the male gaze and objectified solely through her sexuality, the female figures in these photographs are left as 'voids.' This stance expresses a radical posture against depersonalization, marginalization, denial, and the traditional social roles imposed upon women. The frame is designed in the shape of a white house to symbolize the exclusion of women from the public sphere and their confinement to the domestic domain. The color white is chosen as a symbolic indicator of marriage, notions of ownership/dominance, and the myths of purity and cleanliness attributed to women.
