Bukağı (Hobble)
Project type
Mixed media on canvas with traditional Turkish carpet, digital print on carpet, and collage, 100×80 cm
History
July 2024
This work is a study that questions how social roles and expectations shape, limit, or erase an individual's identity. Using the motifs of the rug—one of the symbols of Turkish culture passed down through generations—it reflects the effects of family structure on the individual.
The elibelinde (hands-on-hips) motif represents femininity, fertility, and productivity; the ram's horn motif symbolizes strength, heroism, and masculinity; and the abundance motif represents fertility and abundance, as well as the child as a unique part of family and home life. Meanwhile, the bukağı (fetter) motif, with its meaning symbolizing the continuity of the family unit, emphasizes the persistence of social and cultural expectations.
While representing the roles expected of the individual through traditional rug motifs—a symbol of Turkish culture—the erasing of the faces highlights the pressure imposed on identity. This work invites the viewer to reconsider their own identity and societal expectations.
